College Vs. The Culture: A Black PWI Grad's Perspective (Opinion)

It's been a minute since I've posted an article but this seems like as good a time as any since Alabama lost to Texas Saturday night . Life has truly been “life-ing” with me. If you know me or even just follow me, you know. 😔💔💔💔

Let me start by saying that I'm a Black, female, Alabama graduate and resident. As you keep reading, and judging by the title, you'll see why I made this abundantly clear.

Deion Sanders.

I'm pretty football savvy to be a girl 😋.

I know who he is and what he's done for the NFL AND college football, particularly HBCUs. He graduated from Talladega College right here in Alabama (well after the Florida State days) and we all know that he coached at Jackson State for three years.

Now... While we're stating facts I need to pause and reiterate that as an Alabama graduate, I'm always looking for my team to win. Period. End of discussion.

As a Black woman, I'd be lying if I said I don't pull and pray for Colorado because of Coach Prime and what he's done with their program in a matter of months. It's remarkable and Deion is writing a "Remember the Titans-esque" style movie script by simply doing what he knows and loves.

So, it poses the question to all Black graduates and fans of PWIs... Would it hurt a little less if Colorado had to beat YOUR team or alma mater to win a national championship?

For the culture?

He's going to make Colorado an HBCU if he's not careful!

I kid.

My answer...

My heart wants Deion to win if Bama can't get the trophy but NOT at the expense of an Alabama loss.

If he has to go through Nick Saban to get there (which Vegas would LOVE), I roll with my alma mater. All day. Everyday. Roll Tide.

But for the culture, yes... It would hurt less.

Thoughts from fellow Black PWI graduates and fans?
